Sugar Wax – or sugaring paste – is available in two different types.

Sugar Wax with strips

This type of wax is gently heated and applied in a thin layer onto the skin in the direction of hair growth. A waxing strip is then pressed firmly on top and rubbed for optimal contact with the wax. While keeping the skin taut, the strip is removed in the opposite direction of hair growth. This method is very similar to traditional strip wax, which works through stickiness—like a band-aid. The difference here is that the “wax” is made from sugar. This type is mainly used on larger areas such as legs, arms, back, stomach, and chest. If your skin isn’t too sensitive, you can also use it on the face, underarms, and bikini line.

Sugaring Wax without strips

This wax, especially in winter, needs to be slightly warmed to scoop it out of the jar. It works by trapping the hairs inside the thick sugar paste (also called sugaring paste). It is applied with the fingers or a spatula against the direction of hair growth and removed—using the fingers, a spatula, or even a strip (though that’s considered “cheating”)—in the same direction as hair growth. This method is therefore quite different from the strip technique: the direction is exactly reversed, and instead of stickiness, the hair is removed through encapsulation in the thick sugar paste. This strip-free sugar wax can be used on the entire body.

Advantages of working with sugaring wax

It is almost impossible to have an allergic reaction to sugaring wax, since it contains nothing more than sugar, water, and citric acid. Sometimes a little honey is added.

  1. Any leftover wax can be easily removed with water, as sugar wax is water-soluble.
  2. Spatulas, wax heaters, and even waxing strips are easy to clean with water.

Tips for working with sugar wax

  • Use sturdy metal spatulas. These allow you to spread strip sugar wax evenly and easily scoop the paste version out of the jar or tin. Metal spatulas are also simple to clean with warm water.
  • Apply talcum powder before and during waxing to keep the skin dry. Since all types of sugaring wax dissolve in water and sweat, moisture will reduce their effectiveness.
  • Try woven cotton waxing strips when working with sugaring wax. Thanks to their open structure, they bond strongly with the wax. Because of this, sugar wax may seep through a bit more quickly, but it washes off your hands easily with lukewarm water. Plus, the cotton strips can be washed and reused after use.
